CES Recap Day 2

The Verge put it best, describing yesterday’s two hour power outage as a “CE-mess.” The outage was reported around 11 AM and was not restored until 1 PM. It has been confirmed that rain was the cause of the blackout. Once power was restored in the North and Central halls of the Convention Center, the show resumed. So what did attendees do with their “down-time”? Well they took to Twitter of course, cue #CESBlackout:

While the rain may have held up the show and Google’s plans on the first day, they were able to open their three story exhibition yesterday. The booth was by far one of the most eye catching pieces of advertising located just outside the convention.

Sophia may have been taking her first steps on Tuesday, but all eyes were on Aflac’s robot which won the 2018 CES Tech For A Better World Award. My Special Aflac Duck is a social robot with intentions to help children with cancer. Partnered with Sproutel, the duck reacts to touch, includes a microphone, and light sensor that adapts to environments and behaviors. Each duck costs $200, but Aflac will be donating all the robots to any children newly diagnosed.

While smart homes have been a huge portion of new products debuting at CES, a CNET panel including Amazon, Google, and Walmart representatives discussed the controversial topic of letting strangers into your home with the new technology. The panelists argued that we should be embracing the technology as it is no different from what we have been doing already, i.e. leaving a key under the your door mat.

In the smart home space, Whirlpool debuted their WRFA94CIHN model in a sunset bronze, which at first didn’t look like much compared to its competitors; Samsung’s Family Hub and LG’s Alexa-equipped InstaView ThinQ fridge. The model has an extremely small touch screen, which proves that less may be more. It does however feature Amazon Dash Buttons, which usually cost $5, but are at no cost with the model.

While industry leaders from all over the world attend CES, some of our lotus team has been amongst the crowd representing our clients. Somfy, automatic control of openings and closures in homes and buildings was also present on the show floor. Winner of two CES Innovation honorable mentions for “Software and Mobile Apps” and “Embedded Technologies.” Here you can see our own Sam Lins showing them off with Warren Whitlock!

While the show floor was jammed packed, Intel took to the skies multiple times throughout the day and night to showcase their latest products. Although Intel debuted Volocopter 2X first during their keynote address, it was still catching the entire show’s attention on day two. Currently, the aircraft can carry 2 passengers without a pilot at 62 miles per hour.

Intel continued lighting up the sky with a drone show that will be giving its last performances tonight. The show featured 100 Intel Shooting Star Mini drones, over The Fountains of Bellagio and you can catch its last performance tonight at 8 and 10PM.
