When it comes to generating buzz, many small businesses wonder how they can compete with the larger players in their space. They worry how they can get their name recognized without the hefty budgets that most giant companies have. As a start-up ourselves, lotus823 understands that goal of gaining notoriety. In addition to the work we do to build our own company brand, we also support a number of local clients on their journey of raising awareness.
To generate attention for a local business, our PR strategies usually include the following tactics:
Research Your Local Publications
With PR for large or small businesses, the most important thing you can do when it comes to reaching out to the media is researching the publication and its writers. You are more apt to receive a response and interest if you understand a writer’s beat and provide information and/or a story that he/she can use.
With that said, for small businesses, an ideal target is your local magazines and newspapers. Within those publications, there is usually a business section that focuses on news and companies for that specific local area. Sending a pitch to the reporter that covers that beat and introducing your company is a great way to get your foot in the door. If you have big news to share, such as a new initiative, any philanthropic efforts, or a company event, even better.
Host an Event for Local Media
Another way to familiarize local media with your company is through a special media event. Depending on the type of business, you can invite local media to your facilities and discuss the ways in which your company supports the local community. It is always best to have light refreshments as a way to further entice media. The life of a reporter is ruled by story deadlines. As such, you need to make it worth their while to take time out of their day to visit your company.
Sponsor Local Events
In addition to hosting your own company event, another way to build buzz in the local community is through sponsorship of a community event.
At lotus823, we are members of the Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce and Eatontown Industrial Park Association, and we attend many community functions. At these events, we have the opportunity to network with other businesses in our area and learn about the types of services they offer. Oftentimes, these events are sponsored by one of the local businesses. By sponsoring a community event, your business name will be visible on signage, thus further promoting your name.
Apply for Local Awards
Being based in New Jersey, we often look to our local magazines and newspapers for award opportunities. The awards focus on general business topics such as the Fastest Growing Company or the Best Places to Work. In applying for these awards, you are continuing to promote your company and spread your name. For some awards, even if you are not named the winner, your company name may still appear as a runner-up. With that initial press, you are opening yourself up for future opportunities and awareness.
