Still craving an afternoon pick-me-up after three cups? Try a more natural route.
Here at lotus823, we’re big on caffeine. Or, at least some of us are. My average day consists of three cups of coffee, two diet cokes, one green tea, and often, a red bull. According to WebMD, moderate amounts of caffeine (300mg or about three cups of coffee) should do you no harm. Caffeine improves alertness, concentration, energy, clear-headedness, and feelings of sociability.
At high levels, however, (more than 744 mg per day), caffeine may increase calcium and magnesium loss in urine, cause a slight, temporary rise in heart rate and blood pressure, and, of course, keep you up at night.
Had your three cups today, but still feel the need for a mid-afternoon boost? Try one of these five natural scents to energize you, courtesy of FitSugar:
Oranges: “Oranges are not only good for us to eat, but their aromatic properties are also considered very energizing in the aromatherapy world. The scent of orange essential oil is said to be both antidepressive and calming.”
Peppermint: “While wintertime and peppermint go hand in hand, this powerful fragrance works throughout the year! Its menthol scent opens up the sinus passages, helping you breathe easier all day long. Peppermint has also been proven to relieve tension headaches and improve alertness.”
Lemons: “Lemon gives off a powerful aroma that is both energizing and uplifting. This fresh scent is used in aromatherapy for its calming nature, which can aid with mental fatigue, exhaustion, and nervousness. It is said to refresh the mind by promoting alertness and concentration.”
Eucalyptus: “Even if you don’t live like the koalas in Australia, you can reap the energizing benefits of eucalyptus leaves from their essential oils. While it’s long been linked to treating aches and pains, eucalyptus oil also has energizing benefits. It has been shown that brain wave activity increases when people breathe in eucalyptus oil, alleviating both mental and physical fatigue.”
Grapefruit: “With similar properties to lemons and oranges, the smell of grapefruit can leave you feeling refreshed and energized. Inhaling grapefruit vapors may combat stress and depression. In some natural medicine circles, the oil is said to have an aroma that creates a more positive outlook on life.”
